I’ll Take non-Football Sports for $400, Alex

Flip, flip, flip…

One night as I flipped channels, I landed on Jeopardy!

Alex Trebek hosted a Middle School tournament with pint-sized geniuses. I usually shun these shows because I don’t want to know how much more than me a 4th Grader knows.   In Jeopardy! terms, it’s usually, “What is quite a lot?”

But luck was on my side.  Alex immediately read out an answer about sports.  I’m always up for sports trivia. I was riveted.

I heard three sports answers in a row, and the kids only knew the question to one of them.

The first answer was the position Hideo Nomo of the Yankees and Curt Schilling of the Red Sox both played. The question was, “What is pitcher?”  None of the prodigies knew.  I knew.  Point, me.

The brainiacs also failed to come up with the question about the former NBA MVP from the Virgin Islands.  The future Duke University students seemed lost.  Haven’t they studied the ACC’s roots?  Again, I knew.  “Who is Tim Duncan?”

One of the whiz kids did happen to know what sport features the Triple Crown consisting of the Kentucky Derby, Preakness, and Belmont Stakes.

I imagine if David Stern or Bud Selig also happened to tune in, they might have felt some concern, since a trio of Middle School masterminds knew more about horse racing than baseball or basketball.

The Triple Crown answer awarded $500 and it finished off the row.  And it also drained away my interest in the show.  I decided to check out WGN and see if Curt Schilling was facing the Cubs.
